The GCRC Mission Funded by the National Institutes of Health, The General Clinical Research Center will provide on-going available support and resources for investigators to conduct research on human subjects for the advancement of medical science. The vision is to maintain National Institute for Health (NIH) funding as a clinical research center and to become one of the leading research centers in the region/country. This mission is based on: 1. Excellence and efficiency in all patient care rendered by the GCRC staff. The GCRC exists as a vehicle for performing/monitoring research, teaching research skills with community participation and provides on-going education for participants, the community, health science center students, and staff. Our History: The General Clinical Research Center is a focal point for clinical research within the University Hospital and Medical Center at Stony Brook. The GCRC at Stony Brook is one of 77 NIH centers funded nationwide. The GCRC is designed to provide investigators with the resources they need to conduct clinical research under controlled circumstances, and to encourage collaboration among basic and clinical scientists through studies that may translate into new or improved patient care methods. Stony Brook recently joined this NIH funded network in 1998. The Center focuses on concerns that are of particular importance to Long Islanders, such as Lyme’s Disease and Breast Cancer. The GCRC also has a major interest in metabolism with studies on Diabetes Mellitus, Lipodystrophy Syndrome in HIV Disease, regulation of protein metabolism in surgical patients, stroke prevention, Prostate Cancer, Schizophrenia, Dupuytren’s Disease, Cardiovascular Disease and Heart Disease prevention. Department Functions: 1. The GCRC provides the environment, support staff and nursing staff to perform research protocols.
