Duties:
Izolda is responsible for all of the procedures required to measure isotopic enrichments of substances by mass spectrometry, using the Fison's MD800 Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer made available to the GCRC by the Department of Surgery. This involves the following:
Routine sample analysis, including:
- Deproteinization of plasma samples and preparation for mass spectrometry.
- Preparation of muscles biopsies for mass spectrometry, including enzymatic
decarboxylation.
- Preparation of serum albumin samples for mass spectrometry by differential
solubility
- Derivativization of compounds prior to mass spectrometry.
- Calibration of mass spectrometer.
- Sample loading and instrument programming
- Data processing and analysis.
Maintenance of mass spectrometer, including:
- Daily changes and cleaning of injection liners, tuning of instrument
and general checking.
- Bimonthly service and cleaning of source and change of GC column.
- Intermittent repairs, arrangement for major service and repairs.
Quality control, new development and trouble shooting.
Administration:
- Maintaining log of samples on arrival.
- Maintaining data log of results of analysis
- Maintaining regular maintenance and service logs for mass spectrometer and other instruments.
- Ordering and other general laboratory duties.
