Jirina is a certified phlebotomist and medical technologist. Her main responsibility is to coordinate the collection of blood and tissue samples in the GCRC and manage their storage and subsequent disposition to Core or investigators' laboratories. These duties include:

• Setting up and labeling tubes for collection of samples
• Assisting investigators and nursing staff with blood drawing, especially with those protocols requiring critically-timed, frequent sampling.
• Designing flow sheets for nursing staff, so that all samples will be noted for time,date, protocol number, as well as potential problems with collection.
• Preliminary processing of samples prior to storage (eg. centrifugation).
• Monitoring blood glucose with the glucose analyzer. Maintenance of the small laboratory located in the GCRC for processing samples.
• Delivery of samples to Core or investigators' laboratories, or to outside laboratories when required.
• Ensuring appropriate maintenance of equipment in the GCRC.
• Maintaining a log of all samples, by number, date, project number, investigator and assay.
